Wastewater System: Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR)

Moving Bed Bio Reactor (MBBR) is an activated sludge process similar to extended aeration process. In MBBR technology, plastic
carriers are added in an aerated tank which are in continuous motion. These plastic carriers help in improving treatment
capacity by providing increased surface area for the microorganisms to grow on in a small footprint. The contaminants in
the wastewater are consumed by microorganisms on the carriers as they move through the effluent.

The MBBR technology provides the following benefits: –

  • Compact design with small plant footprint
  • High resistance to load fluctuations
  • Does not require a recirculation stream for activated sludge
  • Capacity of existing biological treatment plants can be easily upgraded without the need for new tanks
  • Low capital and operating cost
  • Simple operation with minimal maintenance
